VOLVO’S ECO CHALLENGE TO SAILING CLUBS
Volvo has launched the Volvo Eco Challenge with the help of the scheme’s ambassador, television presenter Chris Packham.
Volvo is committed to environmental improvement, has a long association with sailing1, and is now supporting the sailing community in the UK by providing young members of Volvo RYA Champion Clubs with expertise and funding to help clean up their clubs. Grants worth a total of £20,000 have been made available.
Similar to many organizations, sailing clubs are classified as commercial waste producers and therefore have a duty of care with regards to waste under current environmental legislation. The Volvo Eco Challenge is fully supported by The Green Blue2 and offers grants of between £100 & £1000 to individual Volvo RYA Champion Clubs.
Successful applications will be focused on local wildlife protection, energy conservation, recycling and waste disposal or even awareness of the environment. In fact, the only stipulation for eligibility is that there is an environmental link to the project.
"As a car manufacturer, Volvo has accepted the responsibility to develop and build cleaner cars. But to reach for a cleaner society we must work together with others to develop and encourage new environmental programmes. With the Volvo Eco Challenge, Volvo hopes to bring forward members of a new generation who are ready to think creatively to reduce environmental impact in their local sailing community," explained Lesley Milne, Events & Sponsorship Manager, Volvo Car UK.
